Shrewsbury, NJ, is a quiet little town, although you could argue that no town in central NJ is 'quiet' anymore. Today's crew on Conrail Shared Assets local SA-31 has a couple of things to deal with at the Patterson Ave. grade crossing. Because this is a once-weekly train, some vehicles, and some wildlife, are not used to seeing a train in this location, although the grade crossing protection is functioning normally this day. The pickup driver seems unfazed by the approaching train (albeit at 10 mph), but the two deer in front of the train are running for their lives, and are about to make a sharp right turn directly in front of the lead unit & head for home. |

Oh Deer! With the demolition of an old building and 3 to 4 acres of wooded area just a few hundred feet west of this photo, these deer have recently been made homeless, and wander about the tracks and surrounding neighborhood. I am happy to report that neither the crew on Conrail local SA-31 or the young bucks on the ground were harmed on this day. Everyone went home safe with quite a story to tell their families tonight.... |
